Well I will be bringing home Big Red this weekend to do a practice cook for Bixby. It should be interesting as this will be the oppisite of what I am used to. First off is Chicken and only a half hour between boxes. Should be interesting. I am going to practice boxing as well.

The 1/2 turn in aren't that bad its the getting up that extra couple of hours that is a killer. This is going to be really good practice for when you get invited to the Jack or Royal

Well I won't hold my breath on that. Not sure if I would go to the Jack. I would love to go to the Royal, more teams more excitement I think. People put way to much emphassis on going to the Jack but I think the best teams are at the royal. Look at Rob with prairie smoke and spice. he got an invite to the Royal and not the Jack just because we didn't have enough teams at the comps. Yet he still won most of the comps he enetered. it is tough because here in the priaries we can't drawn alot of the teams because it is to far to travel. as it looks this year we will now not have any comps in Sask and only one is going to be sanctioned in Alberta and that is BBQ on the Bow. The Strathmore event will not be sanctioned by the PNWBA this year but by the WCBBQA. this comp does not drawn enough teams because of the date. Same weekend as Whistler, the date can't be changed because that is their Ag days rodeo. We realized that being sanctioned did nothing for us so we decide to put the sanctioning money back into the pot for the teams to win. we just about doubled the prize money this year. What needs to happen is that we get a sanctioning body here in Canada that can meet with the representitives of the jack and fight for a spot for the province to have a team represent it at the jack. Makes no difference if we only get 18 - 20 teams. Saskatchewan should have a spot at the comp. It will be interesting to see if Morden can get the 25 teams this year or maybe because it is being Sanctioned for the first time by the KCBS they may get away with only 15 teams again. So I am not concerned about going to the Jack but am more concerned about the Royal.

I may be wrong on this, but I think for the Royal Invitational is for any teams that have one a GC at a sanctioned event. They also have the Open that is "open" to any team who signs up.

But for the Jack, they draw 1 team per state (of the teams that have won a GC that year) and then they do an at-large draw (where they draw a couple more teams from all of the available teams from all states -- again, the teams have had to win a GC to even be considered). Not sure how they determine the International teams.

At least that's how I have understood the difference between the Royal Invitational and the Jack.

That is correct Steve but the comp must have 15 teams for a first time event and after that it must have 25 teams. That is okay for when you have bug populations. the point I am trying to make is that here in Canada we will not get that sort of turn out. Last year BBQ on the Bow had 24 teams and the GC did not get an invite to the Jack. To me you would see the better teams at the Royal, you are up against more teams and would be more difficult than winning at the Jack.

Well yesterday was a disaster. I was going to cook the chicken on my new GMG but had problems with that so I did not do the chicken as the rest of the day was spent fighting with Big Red. Here I thought the stoker unit itself was giving me grief but as I found out yesterday it was the pit temp probe. so to make a long story short nothing made the turn in times. I have order a few pit temp probes for such a case in the future. So I will do another cook in a few weeks once I get the new temp probes. Everything I touched yesterday broke. Including the cable box in the man cave. Just not a good day all round.
